Career

Rees-Mogg’s experience in the financial industry began when he worked for J Rothschild Investment Management under Nils Taube. He then moved to Hong Kong in 1993 to join Lloyd George Management, where he became a close friend of Hong Kong’s Governor Chris Patten and often visited Government House.

After three years in Hong Kong, Rees-Mogg returned to London and managed some of the firm’s emerging markets funds. 2003, he was in charge of the newly established Lloyd George Emerging Markets Fund.

Despite founding Somerset Capital Management with fellow hedge fund manager Crispin Odey in 2007, Rees-Mogg has since stepped down as chief executive and now only serves as a partner.

Jacob Rees-Mogg has faced criticism for his immense wealth and the potential disconnect it may create between him and the average citizen. His estimated fortune of over £100 million, combined with his wife’s expected inheritance, has led to accusations that he cannot truly understand the struggles and concerns of ordinary people.

In a 2019 interview, Rees-Mogg refused to address claims that he could have earned £7 million since the Brexit referendum. In July 2019, he resigned from his part-time position at Somerset Capital Management in light of his appointment as Leader of the House of Commons.
