Introduced in generation six, with the Pokemon X and Y games, Dragalge is a dual type poison and dragon Pokemon. It is the final evolution of Skrelp and is not known to evolve any further. It is classified as the “Mock Kelp Pokemon” by the Pokedex which indicates its resemblance to seaweed or other algae. This guide will showcase Dragalge’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Dragalge.

About Dragalge

As a generation six Pokemon, Dragalge first appeared in the X and Y season of the anime with the episode An Undersea Place to Call Home!. It will evolve from Skrelp at level 48 and does not evolve further. This two stage evolution line starts as a water and poison type, but Dragalge loses the water typing for the dragon type. The Pokedex states that Dragalge’s poison is strong enough to burn through the hulls of passing ships.

Appearance

Dragalge is a thin, aquatic Pokemon that closely resembles the common sea dragon in real life. Most of Dragalge’s body is purple with black trimmings that give it the appearance of kelp or seaweed and there is also a large red crest on top of Dragalge’s head. It is fairly large at 5 feet and 11 inches, or 1.8 meters, tall. In the image below, you can see two Dragalges and three of its pre-evolution, Skrelp.

Behavior

Dragalge’s involvement in Pokemon media is fairly limited. They are known to be territorial and will spit poison at anything that wanders into their territory. Furthermore, given their kelp or algae-like appearance, it can be assumed that they utilize their appearance as camouflage. The Pokedex states that Dragalge are predators and will hunt by blending into its surroundings and seem to get along well with Dhelmise as they both tend to live near shipwrecks or caves.

Strengths and Weaknesses

There are not many strengths associated with Dragalge but it does have a powerful special defense stat even if it does lack the health pool to take advantage of this. On top of this, it is painfully slow making it difficult to take advantage of anything. Not only that, as a dual type dragon and poison Pokemon, Dragalge is 2x weak to ground, psychic, ice, and dragon type moves. It is immune to nothing and takes 1/2 damage from fighting, poison, bug, fire, water, and electric type moves while taking 1/4 damage from grass type moves.

Best Moveset

Dragalge has a miserable time in competitive Pokemon battles as it is even slower than a few base evolution Pokemon. That combined with a difficult to utilize statline, has seen Dragalge drop down near the bottom of competitive brackets. However, with the Choice Specs, as a held item, and Adaptability as its ability, you can deal a decent chunk of damage with Dragalge. Consider running Draco Meteor, Sludge Bomb, Focus Blast, and Toxic Spikes for the best chance of success. Draco Meteor and Sludge Bomb will benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) while also benefiting from Adaptability. Focus Blast is for type coverage while Toxic Spikes can put a timer on your opponent’s Pokemon.

How to Catch Dragalge in Pokemon Go

If you would like to obtain a Dragalge in Pokemon Go, your best bet is to obtain a Skrelp first and eventually evolve it into Dragalge. Like most final evolution Pokemon, it is rare to encounter the final evolution as compared to the base evolution in the wild. Originally Skrelp required 400 Skrelp candies to evolve into Dragalge but luckily that number was dropped to a more reasonable 50. It does not seem as if Dragalge has appeared as a raid boss in Pokemon Gyms and thus you will need to locate a Skrelp where you can. Skrelp has also been in 5 km eggs in the past, so keep an eye out for Skrelp when you hatch eggs to raise your chances for an encounter.

Trivia

  • Of all the Pokemon released in generation six, Dragalge and its pre-evolution are the only poison types that were introduced.
  • The design for Dragalge is likely based on the leafy seadragon or the weedy seadragon.
  • The name Dragalge is a combination of the words dragon and algae.

    FAQ

    Is Dragalge a good Pokemon?

Dragalge is not particularly a good Pokemon as it suffers from a skewed statline that encourages a bulkier playstyle but has difficulty buying time due to its low health pool. Its typing accomplishes nearly nothing in terms of defensive value, and it is awfully slow which means that it requires a lot of set up or support in order to succeed.

    How does Dragalge evolve?

Dragalge does not evolve any further as it is part of a two stage evolution with Dragalge the final evolution of the line. It will evolve from Skrelp upon reaching level 48 but does not evolve further. In order to evolve your Skrelp, just raise its level to the level threshold and allow the evolution animation to play without pressing the “B” button.

    Is Dragalge weak to Fairy?

Thanks to Dragalge’s poison typing, it is not weak to fairy-types but takes regular damage instead. Dragalge also has a high special defense base which makes it rather likely to survive a fairy type move. However, this benefit is hardly worth the trade off due to its low health pool.

    Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Mock Kelp Pokemon”. While Dragalge’s impact on competitive play is rather limited, it is fairly unique as the only poison type Pokemon that was introduced in generation six. It also has an interesting design that introduces many people to a species of seahorse that people may not have known about. If you would like a special defensive dragon type on your team, reserve a slot on your team for Dragalge.
